Children are like blueberries. No, really, just hear me out. I walked past a blueberry bush the other day and it seemed like the blueberries were STILL not ripe! I know they should be getting ripe by now, but it’s hard to wait. It seems like we wait and wait for them to be “ready,” but that takes longer than we are willing to wait. SO, we just go to the store and buy what someone else already harvested.
Sometimes we need to realize that our children are still growing and maturing, they’re not “ripe” yet. They’re not ready to be on their own, even though they think they are. If you pick a blueberry before it’s ready, it’s sour. When we teach and train our children how to do things, we need to make sure it’s something they’re developmentally ready to do. Children grow, mature, and develop at different rates and with different personalities. There’s even a certain time that the wrist develops enough to hang from the bars on the playground! So, when you work with your child on any skill, yes, teach them, but understand that it might be awhile before they’re “ready.” When they’re old enough, your training will pay off.
